With a contract dispute brewing over his role in the team’s season-ending injury to Dez Bryant, Colt McCoy has been forced to defend his play in the lead-up to the 2017 season.
The Dallas Cowboys quarterback, who turns 40 in November, spoke to ESPN’s David Newton and Joe House about his plans moving forward and what he wants to accomplish with the franchise moving forward.
“I’ve had an incredible career,” McCoy said.
“I’ll still be here. “
I’ve got a great job. “
I’ll still be here.
“We have to have a great defense. “
I just have to keep working hard and keep working on everything that makes me happy.
“We have to have a great defense.
We have to get the ball in the hands of our offensive line.
We have a very good defensive line.
And, I’ve just got to keep that going.
“And I think the same thing with the defense.
“I think the thing that I have to do to get better, it’s the same with everything else.
It’s not just the pass rush.
It takes the same work every day to get to the same places every play.
“The NFL Players Association has filed a grievance over the Cowboys’ season-opening loss to the Buffalo Bills.
It alleges McCoy violated the collective bargaining agreement in order to help lead the team to a Super Bowl title.
McCoy, who has had an up-and-down career, said he didn’t want to comment on the grievance.
He said he would discuss it with his wife, Ashley.
McCoy also said he will play in 2017.”
I’ll be a free agent, I’m going to get married, and hopefully my family and my kids are going through a really good time. “
But I will say that the next couple of years are going to be really, really good.
I’ll be a free agent, I’m going to get married, and hopefully my family and my kids are going through a really good time.
That’s really what I’m focused on.”
While McCoy is on the defensive side of the ball, the Dallas Cowboys have some big-name talent at the quarterback position, with Dak Prescott and Travis Benjamin both making their NFL debuts.
McCloy said he’s not surprised that Prescott is starting for the first time since his ACL injury, but he isn’t ready to say how he’ll handle the situation in the coming weeks.
“Obviously, I think he’s ready to go.
I don’t know,” McCoy laughed.
“What I can say is that the biggest thing for him to focus on is to stay in shape.
He’s been in a lot physical pain over the years.
The only thing he can do is to keep doing what he does and get back to being the best player he can be.”
