IBM reported its third-quarter sales of $1.15 billion, the highest since 2009, as it continues to push its chip-based business into a more advanced state.

The company reported revenue of $4.2 billion, down from $5.8 billion a year earlier.

Revenue fell 1.6 percent to $7.9 billion.

IBM reported a net loss of $6.1 billion, a decrease of 5 percent from a year ago.

The company is expected to post a $3 billion net loss in the quarter.

Revenue in the United States for the quarter was $8.4 billion, up from $8 billion in the same quarter last year.

That’s a decline of 9 percent from the same period last year, according to FactSet.

IBM’s revenue was down 9 percent in China, where it has been growing faster than its peers.
